Reading time assumes about 225 words per minute. Counts use word boundaries and visible characters, so results may differ slightly from a writing app.
What the counts mean
Words gives you a quick sense of a draft's length. The counter uses the browser's word boundaries where available, so numbers can differ slightly from another writing app, especially for punctuation or languages that divide words differently.
Characters includes letters, numbers, punctuation and spaces. The separate count without spaces helps when a form sets a character limit that ignores whitespace.
Reading time is an estimate based on roughly 225 words per minute. A dense technical passage, a visual story or a read aloud session may take longer.
When it helps
Use it to check a draft against an assignment limit, estimate how much time a reading list needs, or trim a message before sending it. The result updates as you edit, so you can see the effect of each change.
